Mentorship

Persistence is the first word that I think of when I want to pursue anything. Having the faith that if I do my part that the rest should take care of it self. Although that doesn't always work out. In my opinion, you cannot give up if you really want it.

The way I went about finding my mentor was a little bit easier than I expected. It started with me going to my Sports Marketing Association club (SMA). During our meeting we would have guest speakers that work in the sports industry talk to our club explaining on how they got their current job and the experiences in the job. A lot of great advice and stories were told in these meetings. After one of our meetings, I started talking to a man that worked at an ad agency in Phoenix. The man put me in touch with another guy who worked for Feld Entertainment. Working with Feld was a great experience that I will always remember. Through Feld I met my current mentor Matt Piva. We met at a supercross race and exchanged information. I spent a lot of time that weekend with Matt shadowing him. I had a great time and learned a lot. After that first weekend, we continued a steady email exchange that still goes on today. As our friendship grew, I was lucky enough to accompany him to more motocross, super cross and other action sport related events. I have learned a lot from Matt and hope to continue our friendship.

I cant agree more that persistence is key when accomplishing anything. Sometimes it really isn't that hard to find a mentor. As in some cases, like yours, you weren't necessarily searching for a mentor, one kind of fell in front of you, which is an example of how I stated in my post that similarities can make a huge difference. Since you and your mentor shared a common interest, it was probably more likely for him to have helped from the start.
