How steroids can be beneficial

Steroids used in an inhaler

Whenever people think of steroids the initial ideas that come to mind are mostly negative. Since the Federal banning of anabolic steroids in 1990, illegal steroid use has become a growing issue. The major concern with them is how they can negatively affect the mind and body. While adding lean muscle mass and making a person stronger, it does not help strengthen the heart or lungs causeing a major decrease in agility.

Anabolic steroids that are made from natural hormones derived from male testosterone have the greatest positive effects when trying to build muscle. In order to build muscle mass the fastest and truly the only efficient way is by high protein diet and rigorous and constant weight training. Consequently the are more harmful in causeing random outbursts of rage which often leads to people geting injured or even killed.

Synthetic anabolic steroids are considered a "better" alternative to natural horomones because they offer the same results plus they give a more euphoric feeling without the side effect of extreme rage. unfortunately there is still a negative side effect to sex organs and increase facial hair growth and worst of all cause major inflammation to your liver.

Cortico steroids are prescribed by doctors to help treat medical injuries at a higher more rapid pace than the human body alone would take. Cortico steroids are helpful for arthritis and other inflammations in joints and most commonly used in medicines. Doctors use them in small amounts to treat specific muscle areas. they are also used in childrens inhalers. They would be fantastic to use in sports medicine but because they are considered a growth hormone they are still banned.

The video above is from a 1987 interview with a sports medicine doctor and an orthoscopic surgeon who discuss the affects of steroids through multiple research studies and person patient users. Its quite interesting considering it was filmed 3 years before steroids were federally banned and how much it is still an issue today.

Track and Field Liars and Cheats

In 2007 United States Olympic medalist Marion Jones admitted to steroid use. For years she denied that she had been using steriods (denial seems to be what most athletes are doing). Jones even testified before two grand juries that she never used steroids.

In a 2004 interview, BALCO founder Victor Conte told 20/20 that he had personally given Jones five different types of performance enhancing drugs before, after, and during the Sydney Olympics. However, Jones had never failed a drug test using the testing procedures of the time, and there was insufficient evidence to bring charges against the athletes.

In October 2007, Jones admitted to lying to federal prosecuters investigating the BALCO affair. She was stripped of her five Olympic medals and sentenced to six months in prison and 200 hours of community service.

One of the biggest steroid scandals in track history would have to be the 1988 Seoul Korea Olympic 100m final. Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson won the gold medal and set a world record of 9.79. Ben Johnson was a respected runner who was always a competitor he was in the top 3 or 4 but was not expected to beat Carl Lewis let alone set a new world record.

Just days after the race Ben Johnson failed his urine test. He tested positive for Stanozol. Ben Johnson was immediately disqualified from the race. He was stripped of the 2 Olympic bronze medals and one gold medal that he had won. They also did not count the world record that he has set. He went from being a loved hero to shaming his country over night. Today Ben Johnson has admitted to using steroids and says that everyone during the 1980s was also doing them including Carl Lewis who has never tested positive. Ben Johnson’s coach Charlie Francis, testified that Johnson had been using steroids since 1981.

I think it is sad that people use steroids to improve their performance. Ben Johnson claims that he is faster than Usain Bolt. We will never know how fast Ben Jonson or Marion Jones really is because he is a cheat and a liar. Once caught using steroids it is hard to ever really trust that person again. These athletes are so phenomenal that no one will ever know what their full potential really ever was. I don’t think these athletes are thinking in the long term what the side affects of these drugs are. You are forever harming your body and health for what? A couple years to be the best? Then you are forever forgotten for your greatness and only remembered as a disgrace.

Sport of Kings

Polo Ponies (Sport of Kings)

4 on 4. On a field the size of nine football fields.

Ralph Lauren’s front man Nacho Figueras:

38 horses are used for a single match for a team. A sport where horses cost up to $200k for each horse. The stakes are high not only to perform at a top level but to win. In result like any other high-end sport the use of steroids and supplements are always in use and questioned.

In polo, trainers say that supplements were given to the horse to help them recover (just like Gatorade or IV). Shot of vitamins and minerals. A common practice.

BioDill combo of B12, potassium, magnesium, and selenium. Has never been approved by FDA so it is illegal in US. The team used a substitute by Franck’s compounding lab. Using the same ingredients as bio dill.

In 2009, at the US Open Polo Tournament in Palm Beach, FL is the super bowl of polo. 21 horses died prior to a match. 7 horses died at the field complex the others died on route to the hospital. All the horses that died belong to Lechuza Caracas team.

Florida State and local officials open their own investigation.

Steroids a good image?

Horse Racing

Steroids a good image?

For this section on horse racing. I am referring to my notes since I am having trouble posting anything.

For me personally on the issue of steroids, I have always felt that any thing that allows you to recover faster, elevate your performance, or allow you to dominate your competitors should be illegal in the field of play. For example, taking hgh, an iv at half time, creatine after a work out, or even drinking Gatorade (although the over all opinion on Gatorade is that it is not a steroid/ enhancer) which all do things that I have described should not be allowed in a competitive area.

Personally I have been on creatine and have taken IVs for training and in the middle of games. I have always notice a difference in my recovery but never have I notice a difference in my performance  that made me feel faster, stronger, more athletic. Although taking the creatine and IVs I did feel I was at a more of an advantage because the creatine and IV gave me the performance and stamina to never come off the field. It felt wrong taking those things.

Each athlete will have to make their own decision on whether or not they are going to use and be on steroids, supplements, or anything else that will give them ‘the edge.’ It is to personal of a subject to regulate on a personal bases but athletic leagues, clubs or organizations can choose whether or not they will regulate any type of performance enhancers. I personally believe that steroids are the wrong image to show on how to reach our goals and are something we should not be encouraging our youth. In result we are seeing that all over our country. Slowly the ban of any steroids or supplements has been increasing in leagues, clubs, and sport organizations throughout.
