El Dorado County
On September 24, 2013, El Dorado enacted a new cultivation ordinance.
Property of an acre, or less, is allowed 200 square feet of cultivation area. Five acres or more may use 400 square feet while 20 acres or more can have a maximum of 600 square feet under cultivation. Setbacks were established at 50 feet on the smaller plots and 100 feet on the 400 and 600 square foot units. Not more than three qualified individuals may participate per parcel under the ordinance.
Supervisors restricted the location of gardens to not less than 1,000 feet from a school, school bus stop, church or other “youth-oriented” facility. The property must be fenced and secured and the garden must be otherwise screened from view by additional fencing, plants or trees, buildings or other structures.

NJ tries to overturn federal ban on sports betting

In an article on DelawareOnline found here that on on February 12, 2014, New Jersey filed an appeal in an effort to overturn the federal ban of sport betting in all but four states.  Those four states are protected by a period before 1991 where the states had to make a decision if they wanted to make it legal in their state to allow betting on sports, and New Jersey is not one of them.  They failed to act in the window given to them some years ago. But now, with much support from political figures in NJ, the states is fighting to legalize sport betting. Its main argument is that the federal policy does not prohibit individuals from betting, but rather makes it illegal for governmental bodies to license or authorize sports wagering activity. Though there is much political backing for this appeal, there is no guarantee the Supreme Court will even consider the appeal.  Now, the waiting game has begun!

marriage

"On June 26, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the sponsors of Prop 8 had no legal right (or “standing”) to appeal the federal trial court’s decision that Prop 8 is unconstitutional because allowing same-sex couples to marry caused them no harm. This historic ruling restores the freedom to marry to same-sex couples in California."

I believe that marriage should only be between 1 man and 1 woman. No same sex couple can naturally have kids nor should they even be able to take care of one. In the paragraph above where it says that "Prop 8 is unconstitutional because allowing same-sex couples to marry caused them no harm" I don't see where they have any evidence stating whether or not same-sex marriage is or ins't causing harm. what do you think? I believe that same-sex marriage is very harmful to you as a human just knowing that its not normal and to the majority of society being shocked that people would even think of that. let alone let it be legal.

Equality of Marriage

This article fights for the marriage system to have equal views on same sex marriage. Utah and Ohio have announced that they do not support same sex marriage. Same sex marriages have been seen as unconstitutional through many people's eyes. Arguments between same sex marriages and traditional marriages have caused conflicts through the government systems with the different states. Should marriage laws be left for the state to decide on them?

Same Sex Marriage in the NFL

In a Mother Jones article found here, the topic of discrimination of gay players in the NFL is discussed. Though the discussion is all about discrimination and the policies that are (or are not) in place to fight gay discrimination, it can be used to see how these policies allow the gay marriage of a player, but how they may not be able to keep that marriage from the judging eyes of fans, players and executives.

Though the NFL and some states have laws and policies against gay discrimination, there is always a possibility of still happening. For instance, Michael Sam, a University of Missouri All-American defensive end came out on the 9th of February, putting his potential career at risk. And with this risk of not being drafted or hired to play; discrimination that could be disguised. But unlike Michael Sam, other potential players who may be gay may choose not to announce their orientation, and therefore forbidding to marry. Though these anti discrimination policies are in the right direction, can more be done? In all, one must note that laws that do not directly pertain to marriage affect marriage consequently.

Can you learn to wed?

In Colorado, a law was proposed to require those wishing to wed to take a pre-marital class. This law proposes that first timers must take 10 hours of the class but those who are wishing to marry a second time are  required to take double the hours of the class. I do not think that this will help those going for a second time around. If you have taken the class already and failed your marriage, why would taking the class again for a longer period help the situation. This could be successful in the hopes to help those who fear failure of marriage. Hopefully the class will be teaching core values and how to handle money issues in marriage, this could be a very good thing for some.
