John FRICKIN Wayne

You most definitely have to live without James Stewart in this particular movie during this time period. Nowadays its probably a different story because were harsher on laws and have a justice system a little better set up than it was back then. In this particular movie John Wayne basically was the law of the city, without him guys like Liberty Valance could come through the town and destroy everything and do whatever they wanted and no one would blink an eye. John Wayne's character made it so the town could live peacefully most of the time as you saw the sheriff of the town did absolutely nothing so he was needed to keep order. Plus I mean come on its John Wayne, how can you say he isnt needed in a western movie?

Agreed, I could end there but for the assignment's sake I must continue. So the town would have been fine on its own through John Wayne's (Tom something) protection. But the town wouldn't have flourished as it was somewhat portrayed in the beginning of the movie. It would have stayed the same because of statehood. But then, where one would like to live is to each its own.
